About the Calumet Astronomical Society, Inc.

Founded in 1975, and incorporated as an Indiana non-profit corporation in 2000, the Calumet Astronomical Society, Inc. (CAS) is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization created for the purpose of pursuing the study of astronomy and promoting the education of of astronomy and space science. The CAS membership consists mainly of enthusiasts from the Northwest Indiana and Chicago metropolitan areas, but is open to anyone.

 

CAS Meetings

NOTE:  The meeting dates are sometimes changed due to holidays or meeting room availability, so please check the Events page for the date and times of upcoming meetings and for maps.

General Meetings

The CAS general meetings are now held at Lake Central High School, 8400 Wicker Avenue, St. John, Indiana. in the Large Group Instruction room. The entrance is located near the southwest corner of the building. The entrance is about 50 feet north of Entrance F. The CAS general meetings are held at 7:30pm on the second Monday of each month. Visitors are welcome to attend. At general meetings, we have a program and other educational activities, announcements, share observing experiences, and have time to meet other members. Other than our yearly elections, no business takes place at these meetings.

Board Meetings

The CAS board meetings are still held at Purdue, in room 301 of the SFLC (library bldg.) on the 4th Monday of each month at 7:30.  Visitors and members may attend but only members of the Board may participate in business.  No social activities take place at these meetings.

 

CAS Activities

The CAS monthly meetings include programs such as guest speakers, astronomy software workshops, astro-photo contests, video presentations, swap meets, and informative lectures from CAS members.

The CAS holds public star parties and educational programs throughout the year. Events include public viewing sessions at Lemon Lake County Park near Cedar Lake, IN and public school exhibitions to introduce youths to the wonders of astronomy.

The CAS members have organized field trips to astronomy-related sites such as observatories and museums throughout the Midwest, while some members enjoy travelling to astronomical conventions throughout North America.
